There are countless medical cannabis products that have more medicinal properties than just drinking a smoothie or smoking marijuana. In food form (Edible), medical cannabis shows outstanding potency. Cannabutter is a prime example. True to its name, cannabutter is a real cannabis product whose ingredients are butter, which absorbs the essential oils of the cannabis. It has a lot of potential in its concentrated form and deserves wider publicity.
Its effect in food form (Edible) is always different from smoking cannabis and is usually very strong if used in large doses. In countries that allow cannabis you can buy cannabutter in stores or make your own at home. This article of KITCHENBAR will show you how to make cannabutter at home.
What is Cannabutter?
First we will learn about the main ingredient that makes cannabutter – cannabis. Cannabis, also known as cannabis or weed, is a mind-altering drug derived from cannabis sativa or the plant indica cannabis.
These plants have been used extensively for centuries for both medicinal and recreational purposes.
While many people choose to smoke marijuana or vape, cannabutter has gained popularity. These avocados usually contain essences of cannabis. In countries where cannabis is allowed, you can purchase canna or cannabutter at your local cannabis distribution station. If you want to have your desired dosage of cannabis in avocado then you can make it yourself at home.
However, using cannabis is also considered illegal in many states and countries. Make sure your local authority allows you to use cannabis or any product that contains cannabis.
As the name implies, cannabutter is a combination of cannabis and butter. It is most commonly used to make foods that contain the essence of cannabis, the most common being baked goods such as cookies and macaroons. Before making and using cannabutter, you should have a good understanding of the reaction you will experience when using it. The dose of canna in the cannabutter is very important. Too much or too little is not good.
Cannabis contains two main compounds called cannabinoids – tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is a psychoactive compound at high levels, while CBD does not alter the mind. Depending on the intended use, cannabutter may contain only CBD or both CBD and THC.
Cannabutter is a smoke-free option that still introduces substances in cannabis into the body. It can be used in various edible cannabis products, but its effects are still effective, which makes it popular and widely used.
How to Make Cannabutter at Home?
With the popularity of cannabutter nowadays, you can purchase them at medical stations or local cannabis stations in countries and states where cannabis is legal. However, many people want to make their own cannabutter to get the desired dosage of cannabis. They made their own cannabutter at home.
Cannabutter can be made in a very simple way, normally it is made from the entire cannabis plant (the cannabis flower and even the branches, leaves, roots, and sprouts). If you need to use cannabutter to treat serious illnesses, use only the cannabis flower, because the buds are home to most of the essential oils. If you are only using the leaves to make cannabis butter (for everyday cooking) then you should dry the leaves for a better taste.
To properly fabricate the cannabutter, follow these steps.
Step 1: Decarboxylation
In order to get the cannabis essence necessary for the cannabutter you need to prepare the cannabis. That is cannabis baking before processing the carboxyl reduction rod.
In its raw form, cannabis contains tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which are inactive versions of THC and CBD. To get THC and CBD we need to decarbonize. By heating THCA and CBDA compounds, they undergo carbon reduction – also known as carbon reduction – and become active compounds THC and CBD.
To activate THC and CBD, heat up your oven at 240°F (115°C) and place 1/2 ounce (14 grams) of marijuana on a baking tray. Bake it for 30-40 minutes.
If you are using fresh cannabis, you will probably need to bake it for 1 hour. Conversely, if you are using an older, drier cannabis, shorten the cooking time to about 20 minutes.
Pay attention and turn the cannabis every 10 minutes to avoid burning. Burning cannabis will no longer make cannabutter and the compounds contained in it may have been altered. You will notice when it changes color. Cannabis has been carboxylated when its color turns bright green to dark brown green.
Finally, make sure your oven doesn’t exceed 240°F (115°C), as this can destroy important oil compounds known as terpenes. These compounds are responsible for the smell, taste and medicinal effects of the plant. If you lose them, the cannabutter cannot be done perfectly.
Step 2: Cook on the Stove with Butter
To make the most perfect cannabutter, in addition to the activated cannabis you need the following ingredients:
- 1/2 ounce (14 grams) of carboxyl reduced cannabis
- 2 cups (500 ml) of water
- 2 delicious unsalted butter sticks (about 8 ounces or 225 grams)
- 1 medium-sized saucepan with lid
- 1 wooden spoon
- 2 thin cloths
- 1 medium-sized bowl or glass box
Turn the stove on and boil the water. Turn the heat to the lowest once the water has boiled. Put the butter in a pot of boiling water to let the butter melt. When the butter is completely melted, stir well and add the reduced carboxyl cannabis to the mixture. Cover and let low heat for 3–4 hours.
Be sure to stir the mixture every 20-30 minutes so that the butter won’t burn. After a period of 3-4 hours, the mixture will thicken and have a glossy layer on top.
Step 3: Cannabutter Preservation
After cooking is finished, place two layers of cheesecloth over the top of a bowl or glass box, and pour the mixture through the fabric to filter out the cannabis residue. Allow the buttermilk mixture to flow into the bowl.
Allow the remaining liquid to cool at room temperature for 30–60 minutes, then place it in the refrigerator until the butter has completely separated from the water and appears as a thick top layer.
Carefully scrap the butter from the bowl and place it in a separate container. Store it in the refrigerator for immediate use or for longer. In particular, it can be stored well in an airtight box in the freezer for up to 6 months.
When making homemade cannabis products, it’s best to use half the cannabutter plus half the regular butter with every dish. The use of cannabis in cannabutter will gradually become bad, it can have negative effects on your health. However, you can reduce the cannabis dosage in cannabutter to prevent excessive cannabis consumption.
Although cannabutter is safe to eat, you should consider some important side effects. Unlike smoking or vaping, identifying the right dosage for the products that need cannabis can be difficult due to the varying THC concentrations. The different cannabis concentrations are mainly due to the quality of the cannabis used, the recipe, the preparation method, or where the cannabis was made.
Benefits of Using Cannabutter
Cannabutter contains concentrated cannabis essential oils that have sufficient potential for medicinal use. Usually a small amount is enough to solve a small problem! Because our bodies are always looking for a balance, cannabutter, if taken every day (applied to dishes), is very healthy in the long run.
For people who are nonsmokers and don’t like to smoke cannabis, using Cannabutter (as well as other food products from cannabis) is a great option. Some illnesses such as shortness of breath, respiratory tract allergies, asthma… can be reduced and become better when eating Cannabutter.
Cannabutter can be used as a substitute for butter in all recipes that require butter. For example you can use it to make cakes, make chocolate almond cakes… The interesting thing is that there is no exact formula for the recommended amount, it all depends on your experience.
The only thing you need to remember is that when you consume cannabis food, you will get a slower and longer effect than inhaled (usually the effect occurs 1-2 hours after eating and drinking can last up to 12 hours in large doses).
Edible cannabis products such as cannabutter have a longer waiting time, as they are metabolized differently from inhaled cannabis products.
With edema, it can take 30–90 minutes to notice effects, with reactions peak in about 2-4 hours. Everyone’s reaction to using Cannabutter after use is completely different. It depends on many different factors like how much you use, your gender, weight and metabolic efficiency in your body.
In contrast, smoking or cannabis vaping takes effect within 20-30 minutes and usually disappears after 2-3 hours.
Due to the cannabutter is added to many baked goods and candies, or to other dishes. You can easily accidentally overeat due to its nutty taste and unspecified THC concentration. So be sure to determine how much cannabis you use to avoid any side effects.
Common side effects of edible cannabis include dry mouth, drowsiness, paranoia, impaired motor control, and changes in senses. If you accumulate too much, you may experience hallucinations, delusions or even psychosis.
Finally, it’s important to safely store your can of cannabis and other cannabis products as they are often like candy, cookies or other baked goods. This can pose a great risk to people mistaking these products for regular foods. Children under 5 years of age are at risk of unintentional exposure to edible cannabis products. And of course, cannabis cannot be used in children, it has negative consequences.
Cannabutter is like a supplement. If you use it properly and with the right dose, it will bring many good effects for you. However, an overdose will make you uncomfortable.
